Woodcutting is a very useful skill. It can be used for various things such as chopping trees for money or even combining it with other skills such as firemaking, fletching or even construction. A lot of people think of it as a very boring and tedious skill, I tend to disagree with that completely. This skill is very easy to get to at least 80, if not 99. Overall, it is definitely worth training it to a higher level. But before you start, you may want to visit the woodcutting master next to the furnace in Lumbridge.
Hatchets, commonly known as axes, are of course what you need to chop a tree down. The better the axe, the faster you chop and the more efficient the axe is. But, with quality comes a price. Machetes are only available to members and are used on the
Axes, although not recommended, be can be used as weapons. Refer to the melee guide for required levels to wield these axes.
| Picture | Type | Level Required | Additional Notes |
![]() | Bronze Axe | 1 | This is the weakest axe, not recommended unless for a one-time quick use. You can get this axe from tutorial island, another player, Bob's Axes, and low-level monsters. It also spawns in Karambja. Can be made from one bronze bar at level 1 smithing. |
![]() | Iron Axe | 1 | Another low-level axe. If you have below level 6 in woodcutting, this is recommended. You can get this axe from another player, Bob's Axes, and low-level monsters. It also spawns in Karambja. Can be made from one iron bar at level 16 smithing. |
![]() | Steel Axe | 6 | This axe is recommended for low-level skillers. You can get this axe from players, the Armoury, Bob's Axes, or Gulluck and Sons. Can be made from one steel bar at level 31 smithing. |
![]() | Black Axe | 6 | This item is not usually used by non-members, as it is hard to obtain. It can only be gotten through some Members-only monsters, a level 1 clue scroll reward, or the spirit tree random event. Non-members can only get this axe from other players. This item cannot be made by smithing. |
![]() | Mithril Axe | 21 | A recommended axe for training skillers (until level 41 of course!). It can be gotten from some monster drops, the spirit tree random event, and most commonly other players. Can be made from one mithril bar at level 51 smithing. |
![]() | Adamant Axe | 31 | Some skillers choose to skip this axe. They go from Mithril straight to Rune. This is not a needed axe, but can still be more useful than the Mithril axe. It can be dropped from some monsters, the spirit tree random event, or other players. Can be made from one adamantite bar at level 71 smithing. |
![]() | Rune Axe | 41 | This is the best non-member axe/hatchet. It is also usually sold at a pricey 15-20k gp from players. If you don't want to buy it, you can get it from higher level monster drops, or through the spirit tree random event. Can be made from one runite bar at level 86 smithing. |
![]() | Dragon Axe* | 61 | The best axe in RuneScape, only available to members. You can only get this axe two ways: through trade, or by bravely fighting the Dagannoth Kings. This item canot be made by smithing. |
Machetes (Members Only)

There are various trees around the world of RuneScape. The better the tree, the more experienced in the skill of woodcutting you have to be. In other words, the better the tree, the higher the level you have to be.
| Name and Picture | Item and Level Required to Cut | Experience Gained | Additional Notes |
Tree
| 1 | Axe | 25 | The first tree you can cut. Once you get to around 20 woodcutting, the logs come almost instantly. |
Achey Tree*
| 1 | Axe | 25 | The logs from this tree can be made ito Ogre arrow shafts and bows. You must have started the Big Chompy Bird Hunting Quest to use these trees. They are also used in the quest. |
Light Jungle* [NO IMAGE] | 10 | Machete | 32 | These are used in the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up minigame. |
Oak Tree
| 15 | Axe | 37.5 | These are the next trees from normal for non-members, and usually members as well. They are commonly used to create planks in the Construction skill. |
Medium Jungle* [NO IMAGE] | 20 | Machete | 55 | Also used in the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up minigame. |
Willow Tree
| 30 | Axe | 67.5 | A very popular tree, commonly used for mass training for both non-members and members alike. |
Dense Jungle* [NO IMAGE] | 35 | Machete | 80 | This is used in the Tai Bwo Wannai Clean Up minigame. |
Teak Tree*
| 35 | Axe | 85 | This tree serves little purpose other than to be used in the Construction skill. |
Hollow Tree* [NO IMAGE] | 45 | Axe | 82.5 | This tree is found east of Canifis in the Haunted Woods. The bark is used to make splitbark armour, and cannot be used for logs or fletching. |
Maple Tree*
| 45 | Axe | 100 | There are plenty of these trees near Seers' Village. While the tree may be members only, the logs are non-member items, and are commonly used by both as training for the Firemaking skill. |
Mahogany Tree* [NO IMAGE] | 50 | Axe | 125 | This tree serves little purpose other than to be used in the Construction skill. |
Arctic Pine Tree* [NO IMAGE] | 54 | Axe | 40 | This tree is used in the Fremennik's Isle quest, and can be found on the Island of Neitiznot. |
Eucalyptus Tree* [NO IMAGE] | 58 | Axe | 165 | This tree is used during the As a First Resort quest. |
Yew Tree
| 60 | Axe | 175 | This is the best non-member tree in RuneScape. Once you get to around level 75 woodcutting, this is a great tree to train on. The logs can be sold at a good price, too! |
Magic Tree*
| 75 | Axe | 250 | By far, the best tree in RuneScape (it even sparkles!). It is hard to chop down, but for fletchers, it can be a very good money-maker. |

Birds Nests
Birds nests are a random event. They fall out of a tree and you can search the nest for a piece of jewellery or a seed. You can also get red, green or blue eggs from the nests which can be used for the Summoning skill. The nest can also be crushed with a pestle and mortar and used in the Herblore skill.
We do not currently have any pictures of birds nests. If you would like to send us some, please use the Website Corrections forum. Just click the 'Submit a Correction' button at the top.Canoes
Canoes are a Members only form of transportation across the River Lum. The river travels from Lumbridge all the way to level 35 Wilderness. There are four canoes, each of them better than the previous one.

Training Tips and Hints
Here are the levels I personally recommend in which you chop certain trees.
This is all personal preference, but I recommend you stick the trees outlined above, as I have 99 in woodcutting, and these are the methods that I highly recommend. But you may feel free to use your own methods if you prefer them over mine.
Have any tips of your own? Post them in either the Website Corrections forum or the Player Made Guides forum, and they might just be added here! You will receive credit of course.
